NHL Exodus: The Russian Kontinental Hockey League

Talking heads from all over the hockey world are pontificating over the emergence of the new Russian Kontinental Hockey League (the KHL) and their bold plan for hockey supremacy. Generally derided as a sub-par league that would pale in comparison to the NHL, recent developments and major player signings indicate that the KHL is more of a force to be reckoned with than anyone in the NHL would like to admit.

THE LEAGUE
When the rumbling first started, the “Kontinentalnaya Hokkeynaya Liga” seemed like a pipe dream. Announced back in February of this year, the new venture is backed by Russian oil and gas giant Gazprom and will essentially replace the current Russian Superleague. All of this was pushed forward by Gazprom’s V.P., Alexander Medvedev, who happens to be the President of the Superleague club, SKA St. Petersburg and who announced last year that he intended to build an “Open Russian Hockey League”.
